Ophelia

"Ophelia"

Ophelia is a character in Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. She is driven mad when her father, Polonius, is murdered by her lover, Hamlet. She dies while still very young, suffering from grief and madness. The events are not actually seen on stage. Instead they are referred to in a conversation between Queen Gertrude and Ophelia’s brother Laertes. Gertrude describes how Ophelia fell into the river while picking flowers and slowly drowned, singing all the while.The figure of Ophelia is present in many pre-Raphaelite paintings, an exemple in the works of the painter Millais.

Ofelia è un personaggio di Amleto, di William Shakespeare. È impazzita quando suo padre, Polonio, viene assassinato dal suo amante, Amleto. Muore quando è ancora molto giovane, soffrendo di dolore e follia. Gli eventi non si vedono sul palco. Invece vengono citati in una conversazione tra la regina Gertrude e il fratello di Ofelia,Laerte. Gertrude descrive come Ofelia cadde nel fiume mentre raccoglieva fiori e intonava un canto, scendendo sempre più giù nel fiume. La figura di Ofelia è presente in molti dipinti preraffaelliti, un esempio delle opere del pittore Millais.
